Coping Magazine

For my final project in Editorial Design, I created a magazine that centers nontraditional skateboarding culture in Portland. From the initial concept to the final layout, I was responsible for every part of the process—writing articles, conducting interviews, designing the spreads, and curating and editing all visual content.
The magazine includes an in-depth feature with Skate Like a Girl and a visual story about a mural I painted that celebrates queer and femme skaters. I wanted this piece to feel both personal and community-centered, spotlighting voices that are often left out of the mainstream skate narrative.

Throughout the project, I strengthened my editorial design skills, developed a sharper eye for photo editing and layout pacing, and experimented with typography and visual storytelling. I made intentional choices about color, structure, and voice to reflect the grit, joy, and inclusivity I see in the Portland skate scene. While I received helpful feedback during critiques, the final piece remains a true reflection of my values, creative direction, and love for this community. I’m really proud of how it all came together.

Our Mural
In March, Chloe Levine and I saw an opportunity to paint a mural at one of our favorite DIY spots downtown. We went for it without ever doing a mural before. We got our supplies, sketched out a vision, and went for it. If you asked us three years ago, we wouldn’t even be skating here. Skating has taught me to send it in every way, and I’m so glad we did. Through this experience we not only got to paint our own mural, but we met other artists, more skaters, and a chance to add our splash on a spot we love.
